Our Mission
Our mission is to improve lives for persons with Down syndrome and their families through advocacy, education, and support.
The Halifax NS Down Syndrome Society is a volunteer, non-profit organization which acts as a resource to everyone with an interest in Down syndrome in Nova Scotia. We offer information and supports for New Parents of children with Down syndrome.
In 2013, the Nova Scotia Down Syndrome Society decided to add the word “Halifax” to the front of its name to best represent its current range of programming and services. The aim of the organization continues to be a resource and point of contact for families and other members of the Down syndrome community in Nova Scotia.
The HNSDSS encourages other community groups across Nova Scotia to engage in programming and services for their members with Down syndrome. As a registered non-profit organization, we are happy to assist other community groups with fundraising and other supports.

Social Events
The HNSDSS organizes several social events throughout the year like our Family BBQ, our Christmas party, and our World Down Syndrome Day celebration. Besides these social events we organize fundraising events like the annual Walk With Friends. These events are open to all members and everyone with an interest in Down syndrome. Details and dates will be published on our website.
The Halifax NS Down Syndrome Society organizes educational workshops on topics such as health, development, financial planning etc. If you have a specific field or issue you would like Halifax NS DSS to address, we encourage you to contact us.
Fundraising
Social programs
The Halifax NS Down Syndrome Society organizes several programs for their members like ‘Team Possibles‘, Friday Night Socials, and an annual Maritime DS Family Camp held at Brigadoon Village. These programs offer great opportunities to socialize with peers.
Halifax NS Down Syndrome Society provides support and information to new families. On request members of our society can make a visit to your home. Please visit the New Parent section of our website for more information.
